 Shiv Sena-BJP, Congress-NCP alliances break.

Two of India's longstanding political partnerships —one a 25-year-old saffron alliance and the other a 15-year-old Congress-NCP tie-up — broke on Thursday, as Maharashtra headed for an exciting four-cornered contest, the first in over three decades.
BJP state unit president Devendra Fadnavis and Leader of the Opposition in the legislative council Vinod Tawde announced. As if on cue, later in the evening, NCP broke its ties with Congress, opening up a lot of post-poll possibilities in case of a hung assembly.
It is also a telling comment on its assessment of Shiv Sena, the bigger partner in Maharashtra. Sharad Pawar's NCP and Raj Thackeray's MNS have suddenly become variables in the Maharashtra election equation with all options of pre-poll unofficial understanding and post-poll alliances open to these two regional outfits.
BJP insists that their split is over the issue of chief ministership, seats and some constituencies. The major regional partner, Shiv Sena, obviously had staked its claim to lead the coalition government if the combine comes to power and wanted a greater share of seats, 151.
Sena, however, claimed that these were the seats BJP had asked for. "They have been asking for those seats from the 59 which we never won in the last 25 years. We gave them those seats, now they shouldn't complain," said a Sena functionary.
Strangely, all this does not seem to have affected the Sena-BJP alliance at the Centre. Even before BJP made its announcement, Sena's minister for heavy industries, Anant Geete told reporters that there was no reason for him to resign from the Modi cabinet and that the alliance at the Centre was intact.
