Supreme Court sets deadline to complete trial against lawmakers

Last year the Supreme Court ruled that lawmakers convicted of a crime will stand disqualified immediately and now the Supreme Court has ordered that trial in criminal cases against lawmakers must be concluded within a year of charges being framed.
As the trial is kept pending for years, lawmakers continue to enjoy membership of the legislative body despite being charged in a offence.
The trial courts will have to give an explanation to the chief justice of the respective high court if the trial is not completed within a year.
