Should voting be made compulsory?

It is unfortunate that more people don’t take part in election process. The voting percentage is almost 50 to 60 percent. educated people also don’t vote. The general election in India is a strenuous process if you look at the time and energy invested in it. The government spends over Rs 1,000 crore on the general election.
Elections are the building blocks of a democracy. People are the real rulers in a democracy. And ruling is not anyone's right, it's a duty. How can we proudly claim to be living in the largest democracy in the world if we don't perform this crucial duty?
The only solution to the problem is to make voting compulsory. For instance, if it were made compulsory that to get a loan or a gas connection or a passport, you have to produce a document showing you have voted, then all those who sit at home now, enjoying a holiday on polling day, will switch off their TVs and troop en masse to the voting booths.
