Software piracy in India

    Companies spend years in research and development and spend huge capital to develop software, operating systems and programmes. Consumers risk money, time and the loss of personal data when they use pirated software. According to the 2011 Global Software Piracy Study done by an independent firm, Business Software Alliance (BSA), about 63 percent of Indians used pirated software. global IT theft exceeded $63 billion, which hurt economic growth, job growth, investment and incentives for innovation. Software piracy has also inflicted serious damage to the country’s economy, with tax revenues to the tune of millions of rupees being lost. The Indian Government lost an estimated Rs 4330 Crore in taxes in FY 2009 to software piracy.
