Uma Bharti : Electric crematoriums should be shut.

he water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation minister, Uma Bharti. She said that religious leaders - "sadhus" - have not approved the use of electric (many have been converted to CNG) crematoriums.
Bharti had formed a committee to study and recommend technologies that can cut down on river pollution from crematoriums. They would like her to explain how bodies can be burnt in the traditional way without adding to the pollution from partially burnt bodies that are disposed of routinely in rivers.
said the head of Centre for Science and Environment, Sunita Narain. Sushmita Sengupta of CSE's water programme said unburnt bodies are causing major bacterial pollution in Varanasi.
I think they are assessing factors which can help burn bodies completely with the same amount of wood." Manoj Misra of Yamuna Jiye Abhiyan feels "improved" traditional crematoriums are often more efficient than the conventional pyres along ghats.
On Yamuna, the minister said: "I wish one day the PM can bring foreign delegates to show or spend some time along Yamuna, like he did recently in Sabarmati." She was all praise for the Sabarmati riverfront project and called for other rivers to be developed on those lines.
