Solid Waste Management in India

shriram | 28th January 2014 | Entertainment And Sport

In recent years, waste management has been the only other unifying factor leading to public demonstrations all across India, after corruption and fuel prices.
In 2000, India finally framed a solid waste policy based on the committee's report, requiring all cities to devise comprehensive waste-management programmes that include household collection of segregated waste, recycling and composting but this was never implemented. Currently, some 340 million people live in Indian cities; by 2030 the number is estimated to double.
The Energy and Resources Institute in New Delhi has estimated that by 2047, waste generation in India's cities will increase five-fold to touch 260 million tonnes per year. Communities living around landfills continue their agitation against dumping of garbage in their backyard. Population density and the scale of increasing urban sprawl in India make finding new landfill sites around cities nearly impossible due to the sheer lack of space for Locally Unwanted Land Uses. The reported incidence of dengue fever nationwide has risen nearly 600% over the last five years. Accumulation of rain water in non biodegradable waste littered around a city act as a major breeding environment for mosquitoes, thus increasing the density of mosquito population and making the transmission of mosquito related diseases like dengue, yellow fever and malaria easier. Municipal waste on streets and at the dumpsite is an important source of food for stray dogs. Rabies due to stray dog bites already kills more than 20,000 people in India every year. The ultimate solution to controlling stray dogs is proper waste management.
The waste management problems are still unsolved and might lead to a crisis if this continues for too long without any long term planning and policy reforms. Solid waste and Waste water needs to be managed in order to reduce threats to public health, safety, and the environment.
